IELTS (General) can also be used when applying for Canadian citizenship. The exam consists of four parts: Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking, with each section scored separately and then an overall average of all four parts are taken for the final score. The maximum score on IELTS is a band 9. Most colleges require a minimum band 6 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each area).

  • TOEFL

The TOEFL Test is a standardized test that measures English proficiency level for those who were educated in non-English speaking countries and is used for acceptance into post-secondary institutions around the world. TOEFL is broken up into four parts: Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening. While IELTS and TOEFL have similarities, test takers should thoroughly prepare for each exam on its own. One of the major differences is that during the TOEFL speaking portion, the student is using a computer, whereas in IELTS it is a certifief in-person examiner performing the speaking portion. The maximum TOEFL score is 120, with most colleges and universities requiring a minimum of of 80 (with a minimum of 20 in each area).

Each section is scored from 200 to 800. The lowest score you can get on the SAT is a 600; the highest score is a 2400.
